The core mission of the interdisciplinary Institute of Advanced Military Studies (IAMS) at the Kwara State University (KWASU),
is to develop an Africa wide community of finely groomed Afro-centric policy framers and makers engaged in the critical intersections of
the military and the larger African society. The democratization, through the expansion of the discursive space, of the affairs of the
military in relation to society and state, is integral to the continued legitimacy of military organizations, especially in the post
colonial setting. The widening and deepening of the intellectual berth is critical to very efficiency of military organizations at
the strategic, tactical and operational levels. The high level IAMS products would be exposed to the most recent and sophisticated
understandings of the multi-dimensional challenges of war, development and the military as well as the implications, at theoretical,
conceptual and practical levels, of policy preferences for the transformation of Africa. The intensive theoretical academic program
would groom students through immersion in the theories and praxis in global developments in relation to war and warfare as fundamental
human challenges. The program would also investigate the immense transformational consequences of war for society and state and their
Ontologically, the substantive engagements of the Institute of Advanced Military Studies is premised on the recognition of war as a problematic existential reality that is central to the evolution of world history and development; social, political, economic. At the continental level, the political spaces all bear the imprint of military appropriation. Against this background, the objectives of the IAMS are, through cutting edge research, to bridge discernable gaps in the appreciation of the interactive connectedness of the military as an institution and developments, including the trajectory of the whole spectrum of pivotal human engagements, of the larger society at both the global and local levels. The focus of IAMS is on the expressions of the paradoxical nexus between the military and state and society in the post colonial environment.
The IAMS provides a unique national platform to generate profound perspectives even while cross pollinating critical insights through seminars, research, developing narratives, analytical and conceptual, into the factors within and without the military establishment, informing the overall placement of the military in the developmental process. The outputs of the institute's research initiatives are designed to impact the formulation of policy, by both civilian and professional policy framers, in relation to overall national development, in respect of the military itself and its role in state and society at large. The Institute awards a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Advanced Military Studies.
