Library and Information Science

The Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) of the Kwara State University was established during the 2009/2010 academic session to run a four- year Bachelor degree in Library and Information Science (B.Sc.).

The department was one of the foundation departments of the university at its inception in 2009. The department is housed in the College of Information and Communication Technology of the University which equally houses two other departments namely: Department of Mass Communication and Department of Computer Science.

The College was created to bring like disciplines together under the same umbrella to enhance cross fertilisation of ideas at the point of learning so as to produce all round information managers who will be highly useful to the nation. As at 2015/2016 session, the department graduated about one hundred and twenty students. This showed the level of popularity and awareness of library and information as a modern discipline for personal and national development. From the humble beginning in 2009/2010 session, the department recruited academic staff and attracted experienced lecturers on sabbatical leave to form a solid foundation for the young department.
The University authority approved and released funds for the development of the department as a result of which a college building has been built. The college building houses lecture rooms, departmental demonstration library as well as cataloguing and classification laboratories. All these are geared towards effective teaching and learning and production of well-trained information scientists.
