Jimoh, while commending the effort ofthe University management for enabling the take-off of the union, sought cooperation among the management, union executives and union members.
He advised the union to engage in dialogue as a way of resolving arising issues between them and the management and added that the management and the union should be flexible on any issue for mutual benefits.
``It should be a win-win situation between the management and the union,’’ he stated.
The Branch Chairperson, Comrade Mariam Ahmed, also speaking at the event, appreciated the magnanimity of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AbdulRasheed Na’Allah and the Management staff on the approval of the branch’s take-off.
Ahmed explained that the law that established the University stated that union activities in the University would not take place until after five years of its establishment and after the expiration of this five years, the Vice-Chancellor approved the take-off of union activities.
She further commended the remarkable feat of the University management on the payment of Hazard Allowance for the first time in the history of the University to its entire staff.
She said the act was very encouraging and served as motivation to the staff, making them realise their efforts were deeply appreciated by the management and thereby propelling them to do more in the area of productivity.
While requesting that the 2019 Hazard Allowance be included in staff salaries and not paid separately, the Chairperson appealed that the 58 per cent balance of the 2018 Hazard Allowance should also be paid by 2019.
Ahmed further appealed to the Management to approve payment of Responsibility Allowance to each departmental head and also allocate some hectares of land to the union for its members to acquire.
The Chairman, KWASU Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Issa AbdulRaheem, charged all unions in the University to meet with the government to express their needs, especially the need for the government to support the University.
The Vice-Chancellor, remarking, said the university system needed unions for checks and balances in the system.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Sulaiman Jamiu, he appealed to the state government to support the University with funds so that it would be able to meet all the requests of its unions.
Na’Allah said the University was not buoyant but it would always prioritise it staff’s welfare as it would never owe salaries even in the face of hardship, adding that the latest date it would pay monthly salary would be 25th, every month.
He promised that the management would pay the balance of the Hazard Allowance as soon as it was able to, since the University relied solely on Internally Generated Revenue.
