Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Nigeria, is an institution of higher learning owned by the Kwara State Government.

The Bill for the establishment of the Kwara State University was signed into law on December 24, 2008, by the then Governor, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki while the certificate and instrument to operate the University was obtained on February 9, 2009, from the National Universities Commission (NUC). Kwara State University is the 34th state-owned and 95th University licensed to operate in Nigeria.

KWASU began academic operations in October 2009 with lectures starting in December 2009.

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in 2010 as the sixth faculty.

In 2019, the University transitioned from the collegiate system to faculties.

The Faculty of Law, the seventh faculty, was accredited by both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council for Legal Education in 2020.

Postgraduate programmes commenced during the 2014/2015 academic session with the establishment of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences began operations in 2022 following NUC approval for Kwara State University to commence the Medicine and Surgery MBBS programme in 2022.

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences was carved out of Basic Medical Sciences in 2024.

On May 30, 2024, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, signed the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital Law, facilitating the conversion of the Ilorin General Hospital to a Teaching Hospital.

The Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Clinical Sciences were then created and housed in the College of Health Sciences alongside the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

On March 17, 2026, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria granted KWASU’s MBBS programme the nod to commence clinical training.

Back in March of 2023, the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences was unbundled to create the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty Management & Social Sciences.

In the 2024/2025 academic session, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences was established at the Osi campus.

The Osi Campus of the University was commissioned on January 8, 2025.

In 2025, the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences moved to the Ilesha-Baruba campus, bringing to fruition the 3-campus vision of the institution’s founding fathers.

Currently, the University has 1 College of Health Sciences, 1 School of Postgraduate Studies, and 13 faculties.

The institution has graduated thirteen (13) sets of first-degree students and ten (10) sets of postgraduate students.
