A professor of Islamic history at Kwara State University has advocated for the training of Islamic scholars in the art of mediation and conflict resolution. These new skills, he said, will help mitigate sectarian and communal clashes across Nigeria and West Africa.
Professor Sulaiman Sheu Adua made this call while delivering the 18th inaugural lecture of Kwara State University titled “The Role of Contemporary Nigerian Islamic Scholars in West Africa” on June 25, 2025.
Prof. Adua highlighted the vital roles Islamic scholars play in community outreach, social welfare, interfaith dialogue, and youth mentorship urging government and NGOs to invest in youth development programs, noting that religious leaders can mentor young people and help prevent radicalisation.
The inaugural lecturer also praised the resilience of Nigerian Islamic scholars in the diaspora, saying their documented contributions to host communities reflect a deep commitment to faith and humanity.
He recommended stronger collaboration between religious leaders, governments, and organizations across West Africa to tackle shared challenges and build lasting peace.
