Power and Service
Functions of the Power and Services
- KWASU is located in Malete town, situated about 60 kilometres from Ilorin, the State Capital. The University experiences a shortage in electricity supply of which diesel generators are used to complement it.
- The main campus has various options for electricity generation: PHCN 33kv/11kv Substation; Diesel generators (Perkins 500kva and 1500kva and Mtu 1135kva) and Micro grid hybrid Solar PV system.
- The first two are largely used to power most of the load requirements on campus. Generators are mostly used to complement the PHCN supply. The generator power supply is centralized with that of the PHCN Substation.
- The PHCN 33kv electricity supply is stepped down to 11kv and the 415V low voltage level generated by the MTU and Perkins generating plants is stepped up to 11kv via a transformer and transmitted through an 11kv voltage level transmission line provided to the step-down distribution feeders in the campus.
- Stand-alone generators of smaller capacities (100 to 250kva) are also installed in some locations on the campus in case of no power supply from the central power station.
The Power and Services unit is statutorily committed to the following functions
- Maintenance, upkeep and repairs of all diesel generators of various capacities.
- Maintenance, upkeep and repairs of Air conditioning units and equipment. A large number of offices and rooms are equipped with air conditioners ranging from 2hp to 10 tons of capacity. They are to be kept in optimal working condition level.
- Provision of advisory/technical information and solutions on power and air conditioning equipment.
- Putting in place the necessary policy/requirements (where not available) on correct use/operation and maintenance of plants and equipment.
- Creation of maintenance template (where not available); records/data and information on diesel power generation and air conditioning-related matters.
- Installation and servicing of plants and equipment and organization of internal and external training on power and air conditioning equipment for the Unit’s members of staff.
